What is Motion Control?

Motion control, also called servo postioning control, is the process of moving a load on a mechanical system. The load is placed on a ball screw or a belt drive that is attached to a stepper motor, or a gearbox  and servo motor combination.

Through a drive the motor receives its commands, which are processed through a controller. Attached to the controller, is the user interface, or the human machine interface (HMI). This HMI is used to access the controller and change the parameters and the drive commands to the motor.

Motion control plays an important part in robotics and CNC machine tools. Motion control is also associated with systems in the printing, packaging, and assembly industries.
